no sadly I'm not from there, but I recently got back from being in New Zealand for three months. it was great and I hope to live there for an extended period of time someday... *sigh* but while I was there, I worked with a carver and saw lots of carvings and woodwork... it's kind of funny that I'm so into it now because I used to hate working with wood... :)

The hei-matau are gorgeous. Is the inlay done with an adhesive or by creating a snug space in the wood? I imagine both, but have not carved wood.

Also, what kind of precautions do you take when carving the abalone/paua? I understand that it is rather toxic dust.
